Magic Kits, Cards and Supplies
When
people think of magic and magicians, there are two types that may spring
to mind. One type is the magic of fantasy, straight from the world of
Merlin and Harry Potter. This usually comes complete with incantations
and people being turned into frogs and newts. The other kind is the
type you see at parties, on stage, and sometimes on street corners.
While the fantasy magic makes a great read and may look good on T.V.,
it is the illusionist that can keep us captivated for hours with nothing
but his hands and a couple little props. Some people may pretend to
be unimpressed by illusionists, but they continue to amaze us as the
years go on.
Here at magicagenda.com, we strive to bring you the best information,
tips, and hints regarding magic. We are not affiliated with any brands
or companies, although we may reference some products. We aspire to
share our love of illusion with you, the future master illusionist.
Magic has been around in one form or another since mankind has been
writing things down. Oracles, fortune tellers, witches, and sorcerers
have been a part of life seemingly since civilization began. They may
have had different names depending on the time and country, but they
were always there.
In medieval times, royalty often had a sorcerer who could conjure “spells”
to cure ailments or do other things. The Salem Witch Trials were started
because people feared the spells that witches could cast. These people
had no extraordinary powers; those who were executed were innocent of
any wrongdoing. Many “sorcerers” and “witches”
were simply skilled at healing. But the idea of magic has captivated
the minds of men for as long as anyone can remember.
Illusionists took advantage of this fascination and molded it to suit
their abilities. Instead of making people well or casting spells, illusionists
can make things vanish into this air or read your mind.
The last few decades have seen a surge of popularity in illusionists.
David Copperfield and Siegfried & Roy became household names when
they took to the stage in Las Vegas. These magicians not only performed
spectacular illusions, but they added in extravagant showmanship as
well and quickly became world-famous. While they have a large following,
magicians like Penn & Teller have managed to alienate themselves
from the rest of the magical community by revealing how they perform
their tricks. David Blaine is a well-known magician who emulates the
style of Houdini by performing traditional illusions along with displays
of body endurance.
Street magicians are rising in popularity because they have no stage
production to rely on. Many people feel that this makes them more authentic.
They cannot employ the “smoke and mirrors” tactics that
stage magicians can. The rise of these street performers along with
magicians like Chris Angel who combines magic and daredevil acts has
caused a resurgence in the public's interest in magic. Since most
people do not have the determination to learn magic, they will be fascinated
by watching anyone who knows some.
The most popular illusions for beginners to work on include coins and
decks of cards. These are popular because they are easy to get a hold
of, there are nearly countless tricks you can do with them, and you
can carry them with you anywhere. This means that wherever you are,
you can practice your tricks and try them out on strangers. If you mess
up, who cares? You'll probably never see that person again!
If you want to be set up to do magic quickly, you can buy a magic kit.
These will have some basic equipment and instructions in them. One of
these will be your best launch pad to learning some of the really good
tricks like vanishing, transformation, prediction, and levitating. Many
tricks relating to these things are easy to master, but they will still
amaze your audience.
Usually they will either have a Svengali deck or stripper deck of cards.
In a Svengali deck, there are differently sized cards in the deck, allowing
you to perform relatively easy mind-reading illusions. Upon close examination,
these are obviously trick cards, so they cannot be inspected by an audience
member. Stripper decks can be inspected by an audience member, but still
make it easy for the magician to find a specific card.
Get yourself some equipment and instructions and dive right in, before
you know it, you'll be performing tricks for friends, family,
and strangers.
